When I first set my eyes on San Francisco I was astonished by the beauty but also the historical treasures that the city has to offer. The first monument I had the chance to explore was the legendary Golden Gate Bridge. I was surprised to find out that the bridge is named after the Golden Gate Strait, which is the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. Furthermore, during its construction which began in 1933 and lasted four years eleven man died in total. However, I was concerned to discover that the locals didn’t knew those facts. Since I grew up and spend most of my life Paris it is my duty to be aware of the history behind the most important monuments in the city. For instance, most Parisians know the context in which the Eiffel Tower was created. When we walk down the Champs Elysée, we don’t only see a gorgeous avenue but a representation of the French military power of the nineteenth century. During the interviews, I’ve came to the unfortunate conclusion that the habitants of San Francisco doesn’t have the same cultural awareness as we do. The lovely people that answered our questions were clueless about the history of their city. None of them knew when Al Quartz was created or who designed the Union Square fountain.
